Functional Alcoholics

intervention by family and friends

A functional alcoholic is a subtype categorized by middle aged people who have well settled careers and stable homes. They usually drink regularly but manage to hide their alcoholism well. Thus, this subtype rarely seeks treatment for their problem. Their career and status provides them with good monetary support and a camouflage for their drinking issues.

Symptoms of a Functional Alcoholism

A functioning alcoholic uses alcohol to deal with work pressure and stress and easily justifies it. They consume alcohol every day after work at home or outside with people who can also drink excessively. Functioning alcoholics look down at people who can’t drink excessively and can’t hold their drinks while they seek pride in consuming large quantity of alcohol. After a hard day at work they like to take drinking as a recreational activity and engage in activities related to alcohol to hide their addiction. They even take socializing as an excuse to drink. Most of functioning alcoholics do not think they have an addiction problem as they like to think of drinking as a status symbol or a way to unwind.
