Alcohol Addiction and Cancer

Most of us know that alcoholism has been frequently linked to different types of cancers of mouth, esophagus, liver, throat, colon and rectum, breast and pancreas. There are numerous evidences suggesting that a large percentage of cancer cases are directly or indirectly associated with the regular and heavy consumption of alcohol.

A combined analysis of cancer-related studies has also revealed that alcohol consumption significantly contributes to an increased risk of ovary cancer in women and stomach cancer in general. However, it’s still controversial whether alcohol consumption directly causes cancer or not, but it is for sure that it causes severe damage to the body tissues, which at later stages can result in cancer.

Excessive Alcohol Consumption Raises the Risk of Cancer

  • Cancers of Mouth, Esophagus and Throat
  • As mentioned earlier, alcohol causes damage to the body tissues, especially in the digestive track. Once damaged, the cells try to repair themselves, but alcohol slows down their repairing ability. It may further lead to change in DNA that can be a step towards cancer.

Those smoking, along with drinking, are at a higher risk of falling prone to such dangerous diseases. Alcohol acts as a solvent for harmful chemicals that go inside your body through smoking. Gradually, these toxins get into the cell linings and start depositing in the digestive tract. This affects these cells’ ability to repair, raising the risk of oral cancer.

  • Liver Cancer
  • Liver cancer has been frequently associated with regular and excessive consumption of alcohol. The substance misuse causes inflammation, ultimately damaging the liver and raising the risk of cancer.

  • Breast Cancer
  • Studies show that alcohol can affect the level of estrogen in the body, which may increase the risk. Women who do not consume sufficient amount of folate or Vitamin B are said to have higher risk of developing breast cancer.

  • Effect on Body Weight
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol, in most cases, contributes to weight gain. An obese or overweight person is known to have higher risk of developing cancer.

Most of us are very well aware of potential effects of alcoholism on our physical and mental health. Alcohol is addictive and it not only damages the body tissues, but also shows strong effects on concentration, mood, performance, coordination and judgment of a person.
