Alcohol Related Brain Impairment

The damaging effects of alcohol are not limited to just blurred vision, slowed reaction times, slurred speech, impaired judgment and slips in memory, but these extend to blackouts, memory lapses and brain damage. Not only this, drinking in excess of the recommended levels constantly for prolonged period may lead to alcohol related brain impairment (ARBI).

Brain Impairment

In most cases, an individual behaves normal after undergoing a detoxification treatment following a rehabilitation program; however, in severe cases, the brain deficits may persist even after they achieve sobriety. The severity of brain damage or impairment depends upon a range of factors such as

  • Frequency of alcohol consumption
  • Amount of the alcohol consumed in one session or over a long period
  • How long the person has been drinking
  • General health status of the alcoholic
  • Age, gender and family history of alcoholism
  • What sort of co-occurring disorders a person is suffering from
  • Frequency of blackouts and memory lapses

According to a study conducted by NIAAA, excessive consumption of alcohol starts producing noticeable impairments in memory only after a few days of heavy drinking sessions. It becomes really difficult for an intoxicated person to recall the details, addresses, phone numbers or any other key information just when it is needed. They may go completely blank and forget even the entire event in severe cases.

Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome

According to NIAAA, around 80 percent of alcoholics develop serious brain disorders; however, some may be short lived and others may be persisting and long lasting. The disorder is called Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS). The short-lived condition is known as Wernicke’s encephalopathy and the long-lasting and extremely troubling condition is called Korsakoff’s psychosis.

The short-lived disorder generally results in mental confusion, difficulty with muscle co-ordination and oculomotor disturbance (paralysis of the nerves that move the eyes). Individuals with this disorder may or may not show all three symptoms. The long-lasting syndrome is categorized by persistent memory problems, forgetfulness, frustration and difficulty with muscle co-ordination.

Treatment

These symptoms may or may not affect people with alcoholism in similar manner. However, the memory relapse pattern remains the same. It’s critical to seek prompt medical and psychiatric assistance in such cases. The major problem occurs when individuals with alcoholism show denial about their bad drinking habit and are not ready to accept that it’s actually a great deal of problem.

Intervention by family and friends or professionals is important to treat alcoholism as well as mental disorders. Detoxification is the first step in the process, following which alcohol rehabilitation program integrated with psychiatric treatment is required. Most individuals tend to experience even more debilitating symptoms after withdrawal process.
