Young Adult Alcoholics

According to a research conducted by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), there are five subtypes of alcoholics. Young adult alcoholics are the largest subtype among other five. They are the largest in number, yet the least to seek treatment for their problem.

As the name suggests, the age group in this subtype is usually young and below the age of 25. These individuals mostly start drinking in school or university with friends to be socially acceptable or under peer pressure. They drink high quantity of alcohol and go on alcohol binge with friends at parties and on weekends. While drinking, they cannot keep a track of their drinks and as a result, often consume dangerously high quantities of alcohol.

Young adult alcoholics mostly do not use other substances or drugs and are just primarily addicted to alcohol. They have low rate of history of family alcoholism and other mental disorders. At Alcohol Addiction Resource’s alcohol rehab center, you can detoxify your system in the least painful way possible, if you relate to the above symptoms. Alcohol consumption often hinders your thought process, causing anxiety or guilt at later regaining consciousness. Consuming high quantity of alcohol can also cause extreme damage to your mind.

Symptoms of Alcoholism

  • Regular craving for alcohol
  • Consumption of high quantity of alcohol
  • Physical dependence on alcohol
  • Lack of control
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms on not drinking
  • Drinking alone or in secret
  • Blacking out
  • Losing interest in hobbies, studies, work etc
  • Gradual increase in alcohol intake to get drunk

Often alcoholics do not accept the problem of being an addict till later stages as they live in denial or ignorance. Young individuals are also proud of the quantity of alcohol they can consume and take it as a matter of pride among their peers. Lack of knowledge and education on the subject of addiction among the young is a major cause of alcoholism.

Treatment of Young Adult Alcoholics

Young adult alcoholics are the easiest to treat and reach. They usually do not have other addictions like substance abuse or mental disorders. Teachers and mentors at schools and universities can educate the students on problems of alcoholism or arrange for a seminar or workshop. If possible, these institutions can have a counselor to help and guide the students about dangers of alcohol misuse and how to overcome addictions

Many a times, people find themselves stuck in situations where they can’t talk to anyone about their problem due to fear, shyness or guilt and feel trapped. Pride, ignorance or denial can also restrain this subtype from seeking help.
